Based on the 13th Century plainsong, Divinum Mysterium, this setting is for four flute parts (2 C flute, alto and bass) plus 2 handbells, triangle, vibraslap, hand drum, suspended cymbal, and harpsichord. It opens with tolling bells and each voice in opposite corners of the performance space, then transitions to a harpsichord (keyboard) verse, followed by a harmonized, mixed meter variation with flutes. The hand drum sets up a 5/4 dance variation in which the first flute interjects Advent and Christmas tunes before the opening melody returns and the bells toll one last time. A showstopper with rhythmic challenges for all.
