William G. Rose (BMI) is Associate Professor of Music in the Department of Performing Arts at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. Mr. Rose is a multi-instrumentalist, performing on soprano, alto, tenor and bass trombone, as well as euphonium, tuba, guitar, tenor banjo, ukulele, mandolin, st. bass and bass guitar, keyboards and alphorn. At McNeese State University, he teaches the low brass studio, music theory and music technology, has conducted the brass choir, and served as Musical Director for music theater productions, as well as holding the position of Assistant Department Head/Coordinator of the Equipment and Technology. He holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Michigan State University; his principal low brass teachers are Leonhard Rose, Dr. Gerald Grose, Donald Haack, Curtis Olson and Philip Sinder.

He currently serves as principal trombonist with the Lake Charles Symphony and the Rapides Symphony; solo euphonium and soloist with the Calcasieu British Brass Band; and performs locally with the Bayou Jazz Kings, the Lake Charles Jazz Band, and the 1944 Big Band. He performed and competed on alphorn in Switzerland at the Association Festival International de Cor des Alpes 2017 in Nendaz, Switzerland, where his composition “AfroAlp” for alphorn quartet with djembe was premiered; his “Promenade  and March” for alphorn quartet was premiered at the 2018 International Horn Society Festival at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. He also served as principal conductor and composer for the Lake Charles Civic Ballet (who premiered his composition of the full-length ballet Alice in Wonderland in March, 2017) and as guest conductor for the Lake Charles Symphony. He serves as performer, instructor and composer-in-residence with the Midwest Alphorn Retreat, and will be returning to Switzerland in Summer, 2021 to premiere his solo alphorn works in competition (as well as perform solos and alphorn compositions in concert during the tour).

He has served as principal trombone/euphonium with the Milwaukee Civic Orchestra, principal and bass trombonist with Acadiana Symphony, and has performed with: the Milwaukee Symphony, the Milwaukee International Folk Band (sponsored by the City of Milwaukee), the Ron Devilliers/Jack Carr Big Band, the Greater Lansing Symphony, Present Music (contemporary music ensemble of Milwaukee, WI), the Concord Chamber Orchestra, the Plymouth Symphony (MI),the Shreveport Symphony (LA) and the Detroit Chamber Winds (MI). He has performed with many distinguished musicians, including Bob Hope, Donald O’Conner, Liberace, Les Elgart, Slide Hampton, Johnny Mathis, Neal Sedaka, Johnny Desmond, Josie O’Donnell and Skitch Henderson.

He has served as clinician and performed at regional, national and international conferences and festivals, for organizations such as the International Trombone Association, The Big XII Trombone Conference, the Fellowship of United Methodists in Worship Arts, New York Brass Conference and state music education conferences in Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, Louisiana and Ohio.

Mr. Rose is Music Director at St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church in Lake Charles. As a composer and arranger, his catalog includes works for band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, choir, handbells and brass ensembles; his publishers include GIA Music, Warwick Music, Treble C Music, Kagarice Brass Editions, Abingdon Press, Fred Bock Music, Editions BIM, TAP Music, Wayne Leupold Editions, Hal Leonard, Gulfwind Music, and Worship Arts magazine.

 

He is a Yamaha Performing Artist, and has appeared on trombone, guitar and tenor banjo on recordings with artists Johnny Persa, Kevin Clark and the Jazz Revelation, and the LATEX Trombone Quartet. He currently serves as Chair of the International Trombone Association Press and is former Chair of the Instrumental Interest Area for the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. Mr. Rose is a 2014 Melodious Accord Composition Fellow.
